PREVIOUSLY:

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (T-DOT) says crews hope to have Highway 68 in Rhea County fully open by late June.

Heavy rains caused the roads to crack, and forced the complete closure of the road for a couple of weeks back in April and early May.

T-DOT's Jennifer Flynn tells NewsChannel 9's Erin Thomas that since the road reopened to one lane in mid-May, the contractor is having to deal with that traffic, which slows down hauling, delivery of materials, movement in the work zone, and other factors.

Flynn says the contractor should be done with stabilization work in three weeks. After that, T-DOT crews will do their part to rebuild the remainder of the road.

Flynn says traffic has been moving smoothly, even though the road is down to one lane, and says no drivers have complained, despite waiting for a traffic signal to pass through.

"It is preferable to the lengthy detour that they were having to take when the road was totally closed," Flynn says.
