UPDATE:

Hamilton County detectives say a man shot and killed his son Saturday night on Cotter Road.

According to an affidavit, 46-year-old Michael David McElrath is charged with criminal homicide for the death of his 15-year-old son.

According to the report, deputies spoke to McElrath's wife who said she woke up Saturday night because a dog was barking.

The report says McElrath walked in a room with blood on his shirt and told his wife "it was nothing." She saw two guns on the side of the bed, but the report goes on to say McElrath told her "It was a dream" and to "go back to bed."

After she went back to bed, the report says McElrath laid on top of a smaller dog and put it in a choke hold. He then told his wife that he had to shoot the dog in the head.

That's when the report says McElrath's wife got up to check on her son and found him shot. While checking on him, McElrath left the house.

NewsChannel 9 reporter Hannah Lawrence confirmed on Monday that McElrath worked as a corrections officer for the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department for 3 years, in the 1990s.

She also requested McElrath's criminal background history from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, and found that he has no previous criminal charges in the state of Tennessee.

She also confirmed that the 15-year-old boy was a sophomore at Hixson High School.
