Lee Highway SWAT suspect charged in death of children's mother

NewsChannel 9 confirmed with the Madison County, Tennessee Sheriff's Office that Keon Stewart has now been charged with second degree murder, in connection with the death of Amanda Northern.

UPDATE (1 p.m.):

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WTVC) - Police says 23-year-old Keon Stewart will be taken back to Jackson, Tennessee for questioning about the death of his two children's mother, Amanda Northern of Jackson.

In a statement, Jackson police say that on Tuesday evening around 8pm, officers found Northern dead from an apparent homicide at 507 Parkwood Trace Apartments. Her children were missing.

Jackson PD found out Stewart was in Chattanooga, and after an hours-long standoff at a Chattanooga apartment at 510 Central Avenue, SWAT were able to take him into custody around 11 a.m.

The children were safely recovered.

Stewart has been taken to Hamilton County Jail, where he will wait to be transported back to Jackson.

UPDATE (Noon):

Chattanooga Police say two children missing from Jackson, Tennessee have been found safe after a SWAT situation on Lee Highway Wednesday.

Police also confirm that officers have taken the suspect and father of the children into custody: 23-year-old Keon Stewart.

Stewart had warrants for a probation violation on a domestic violence charge. The U.S. Marshals Service tells WBBJ-TV in Jackson that he is a person of interest in another crime.

Chattanooga PD say the children are with child protective services.

Chattanooga police say Stewart barricaded himself in the apartment with his two children. Police say he came out willingly with them, and they are okay.

Law enforcement are responding in force to an incident on Lee Highway Wednesday morning.

It's happening near the Enterprise Rent-A-Car at 5912 Lee Highway and Charles Drive.

Hamilton County Sheriff's deputies, Chattanooga PD, and SWAT are all on scene.

Chattanooga PD spokesperson Elisa Myzal says they are assisting another agency in serving a warrant in the area.

CPD says one building in the apartment complex down Charles Drive has been evacuated as officers try to get to the suspect.
