Couple charged with trying to steal car at Cleveland business
CLEVELAND, Tenn. —
Bradley County authorities are charging a man and a woman with trying to steal a vehicle that was parked and running in front of a local gas station.
Authorities tell us the incident happened Saturday afternoon just before 2 p.m. at 922 6th Street Northeast at the Quick Check in Cleveland.
An arrest report says the victim, Brent Danley, told officers that he left his vehicle running in the parking lot while he went inside. While there, Danley saw a man jump in the drivers seat of his vehicle and try to drive away.
Danley ran out to his vehicle and tried to pull the man out of the drivers seat. As the struggle continued, a woman began to yell at him to quit fighting. Danley then ran inside the store and called 911, while the man and woman ran away from the scene.
Officers responded and spotted footprints in the mud nearby. Those footprints led them to the suspects hiding in the woods.
Police later identified the suspets as 22-year-old Joseph Sarkozy and 21-year-old Haley Lewis, both of Cleveland. The arrest report says the officer searched Sarkozy and found a crowbar wrapped in electrial tape and a set of gloves.
Both were charged with theft of a motor vehicle. Sarkozy was also charged with possession of burglary tools.
Authorities in Cleveland and literally everywhere else urge drivers to not leave their vehicles running while unattended in order to prevent incidents like this from happening. They also suggest locking your vehicle up when you're not using it.
