Suspect arrested, Chattanooga Police officer hit by car after shots fired call

Sunday afternoon, Chattanooga Police arrested the suspect from a shots fired incident. Lawande Haggard is charged with aggravated assault on police, felony reckless endangerment and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

According to police, officers tried to do a traffic stop on Haggard's car after they heard shots fired. They say Haggard did not stop and drove directly at officers. Officers fired at Haggard because of "immediate life threatening harm," according to the Chattanooga Police Department. CPD says Haggard hit one officer, but did not seriously injure him.

Other officers chased after Haggard on foot as he drove away. They found him nearby with help from other agencies and arrested him.

Chattanooga police responded to a call concerning a large group of people in the parking lot of a gas station on E. 3rd Street early Sunday morning.

While officers were on scene, police say shots were fired in the area.

It happened near the Speedway gas station around 3 a.m.

According to police, while they were investigating the shots fired, officers discharged their weapons.

Later, officers conducted a traffic stop and detained more than one person of interest inside the vehicle.

Police did not say how many people were detained.

Police say no one was hit while the shots were fired.

Chattanooga Police Department's Violent Crimes Bureau is investigating.
