Firefighters face countless hazards everyday.

Now, the Chattanogoa Fire Department is asking the city for resources to reduce the risk of cancer.

That resource.. is money so the fire department can purchase a second set of turnout gear for their employees.

Jack Thompson is President of the Chattanooga Firefighters Association.

He says during the a committee meeting Tuesday, they talked to city leaders and asked for the extra funds in their budget to purchase the gear.

They're asking for 1.1 million dollars to do it.

Thompson says with all the carcinogens in fires, firefighters are a lot higher risk of catching cancer and he says, using new gear will help.

Chip Henderson is a city councilman.

He says he invited Thompson to speak at a committee meeting.

"The gear that's there to protect us, that's our lifeline, that's the one thing we can count on to help protect us in a fire is also what can also cause higher risk of cancer for us," said Thompson.

Thompson says with the money, fifteen companies and 150 firefighters are going to be able to get a second set of coats and pants.
