In a stunning upset, Democrat Doug Jones defeated his opponent Roy Moore.

NewsChannel 9's James Torrez was live in Scottsboro, Alabama where many of the voters he spoke with favored Moore for the Senate seat.

The majority of voters in Jackson and DeKalb counties voted in favor of Moore as well.

Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke tweeted moments after outlets called the election.

President Donald Trump, who endorsed Roy Moore, congratulated Jones.

The Alabama GOP issued a statement after the votes were tallied, saying that despite disappointment in the results, "we respect the voting process given to us by our Founding Fathers."

Despite the election being called by outlets such as the Associated Press and CNN, Moore refused to concede defeat Tuesday night. Moore's team instead called for a recount.
